Sinfonia of Birmingham

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE OF VENUE FOR THIS CONCERT: THE CONCERT WILL NOW TAKE PLACE AT ST MARYS, WARWICK, NOT PERSHORE ABBEY AS ORIGINALLY ADVERTISED. WE APOLOGISE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

The music for this concert, conducted by Michael Seal, will start with Frank Bridge’s The Sea – a suite of four movements, which were influenced by at least Arnold Bax and Benjamin Britten. It will be followed by the Copland Clarinet Concerto. The Sinfonia has great pleasure in Julian Bliss being the soloist, as he is one of the world’s finest clarinettists. The concerto incorporates many jazz elements, so is admirably suited to the soloist.
The second half of the concert will be a performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. This is one of his most popular symphonies. At its premier in 1937, it received an ovation of over half an hour! Julian Bliss is one of the world’s finest clarinettists, excelling as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, jazz artist, masterclass leader and tireless
